The Dell XPS 13 2 in 1 is thinner, lighter and whirr-free

The Dell XPS 13 easily stood out as one of the best laptops of 2016. Whether you picked the non-touch, HD version or one with a touch-sensitive QHD+ panel, the 13.3-inch InfinityEdge display made the XPS 13 seem bigger and roomier than it first appeared.

“This convertible’s InfinityEdge display has barely-there bezels that measure just 0.2 inches, making it seem as though the panel were floating above the keyboard,” said Laptop Mag. “It also allows Dell to cram a 13-inch, full-HD screen into a design that’s as compact as an 11-inch laptop.”

A fully-fledged 2 in 1

A year on and Dell has given its award-winning portable another much-needed upgrade. It’s now a fully-fledged 2 in 1 PC, thinner and lighter than before, giving users the ability to fold the display back on itself to switch between laptop, tent, stand and tablet modes.

It’s not the only improvement. Under the hood, the new Dell XPS 13 2 in 1 is powered by a 7th Generation Intel Core i5-7Y54 or i7-7Y75 processor (with Intel HD Graphics 615), packs up to 8GB of memory and can be specced with a 128, 256 or 512GB SSD.

Fanless design

“Another feature worth mentioning (or, really, the lack of one): The XPS 13 2-in-1 has no fans,” wrote Engadget in its review. “Instead, it relies on passive cooling and a very efficient processor to manage heat. Given that I struggle with my MacBook Air’s fans daily, it was honestly refreshing not to hear constant whirring whenever I started stressing the system.”

The new Y-series chips replace the 6th generation Core m5 and Core m7 processors and use a more power efficient microarchitecture to deliver faster performance and superior battery life.

“As for staying power, the XPS 13 2-in-1 features a 46Wh battery that lasted an impressive 11 hours, 46 minutes, on our rundown test,” said PC Magazine. “That’s long enough to get most of the way through a season of Game of Thrones, a transpacific flight to Japan, or an all-day writing session at a cafe (where open power outlets are a scarce commodity).”

A tough yet beautiful laptop

The XPS 13 is every inch a modern 2 in 1 laptop, from its backlit keyboard and carbon fibre finish, to its USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 connectivity. The screen is protected with Corning Gorilla Glass NBT, while Dell has also added a Microsoft Hello-compliant fingerprint reader for secure logins.

The Dell XPS 13 2 in 1 is just one of a new range of versatile portables that includes the Lenovo Yoga 910, the Yoga Book and the HP ENVY x360. These cutting-edge devices aren’t killing off the traditional clamshell, they’re absorbing it into thinner, lighter and more efficient computing devices.
