IFA 2017: The cool laptops and desktops you’ll be buying next

Dean Evans Technology Writer Twitter

With the 8th Generation Intel Core launch now well underway, the annual IFA tech show was again dominated by new laptops, 2 in 1 computers and powerful desktop PCs.

Sure, IFA 2017 had its fair share of big OLED tellies, home robots, new smartphones, smart speakers, plus some nifty mixed reality headsets that will work with Windows 10. But new machines from the likes of ASUS, Acer and Lenovo, all featuring the latest computing technology, were going all-out to impress.

One of these might just be your next laptop or desktop…

Viva the 2 in 1 revolution

It might be the stunning ASUS Zenbook Flip 14. Pitched as the world’s thinnest 2 in 1 laptop ‘with discrete graphics’, it packs a 14-inch touch-sensitive HD display, GeForce MX150 graphics and a quad-core 8th Generation Intel Core i7 processor into a stylish, all-aluminium shell that’s just 13.9mm thick. It’s certainly got the raw power to turn heads and with a reported 13-hour battery life, it also delivers in terms of mobile performance.

If the Zenbook Flip 14 is a beauty, then the Acer Predator Orion 9000 is the beast of IFA 2017. This dark, liquid-cooled PC tower is built around an 18-core Intel Core i9 Extreme Edition Processor, features up to 128GB of memory and quad-GPU graphics. Pair it with Acer’s new 35-inch, 21:9 Predator X35 curved gaming monitor and you’ve got a multimedia rig worthy of the word ‘awesome’.

Redefining expectations

Speaking of awesome, Acer and Lenovo both used IFA 2017 to redefine our notions of what a laptop can be. And what it can do.

The Acer Switch 7, for example, is a fanless 2 in 1 with liquid cooling, allowing it to pack an 8th-Gen Intel Core i7 processor and GeForce MX150 graphics. While the Acer Nitro Spin 5 is a gaming 2 in 1 that combines an 8th Generation Intel Core i7 processor, a roomy 15.6-inch FHD display and GeForce 1050 graphics.

Lenovo Yoga 920
The new Yoga 920 2 in 1 retains Lenovo’s eye-catching watchband hinge.

Lenovo, meanwhile, unveiled the watchband-hinged Yoga 920 at IFA 2017. This follow-up to the Yoga 910 is thinner, incorporates an 8th Generation Intel Core CPU, a 13.9-inch touchscreen (either Full HD or Ultra HD), and comes in snazzy Platinum, Bronze and Copper finishes.

Weighing 1.37kg, the Lenovo 920 is lightweight, powerful and the quoted battery life — up to 10.8 hours (with the 4K display) and up to 15.5 hours (with the HD display) — sounds promising.

AAA gaming on the go

We doubt you’ll get as much staying power from the ASUS ROG Chimera, which claims to be the world’s first gaming laptop with an ultra-responsive 17.3-inch Full HD wide-view display. Powered by a factory-overclocked Intel Core i7-7820HK processor and paired with GeForce GTX 1080 graphics, it’s built to allow gamers to play the latest AAA titles at the highest settings.

In contrast, the new Acer Aspire S24 all-in-one won’t make a good Destiny 2 machine. But it is the slimmest all-in-one desktop PC that Acer has ever built. And by slim, we mean super-slim — the S24 has a 23.8-inch borderless display that’s only 5.97mm thick. The base, meanwhile, hosts an 8th Generation Intel Core i5 or i7 processor and doubles up as a Qi wireless charging pad. Clever.

Every time a new technology comes along, the PC market enjoys a boost. New designs emerge. Performance improves. Versatility grows. As ever, IFA 2017 gives us an indication of what the next generation of PC hardware will look like. We can’t wait.
