Created in France, the proposed Cicret Bracelet dreams of a gadget that can pico-project the touchscreen display of a mobile phone onto your forearm.
It’s an ambitious idea and there’s some confusion as to whether the product actually exists. Some say no, while a YouTube video showing a prototype of the hardware suggests that Cicret’s technology might be more than vapourware. After all, the Ritot projection watch raised over $1.6 million in 2014 and is actively in development. The idea is sound, even if technology isn’t yet good enough to realise it.
Originally announced at the end of last year, a video of a working prototype has recently surfaced, so you can judge for yourself.
According to Cicret, you will he able to use the bracelet to answer a call, view a map, upload pictures to social networks or find out tomorrow’s weather forecast. If the specs are solid, the bracelet has eight proximity sensors that detect any movement and the device is supposedly being designed to meet four important criteria:
- The projection angle needs to be small, in order to reach the skin directly
- Although it is a virtual keyboard, it needs to be controlled by a single finger
- The device must work with any type of skin
- The device must work in daylight and darkness
The French inventors of Cicret hope to raise the 850,000 euros needed to mass produce their product through crowdfunding websites. With ten colours planned, the device is expected to cost between 200 and 400 euros when (or indeed if) it becomes a reality.
